A Guide to Buying Air Purifiers

Given that many people are spending more time indoors and are expected to continue to do so into the foreseeable future, an air purifier is a smart investment. Keep in mind that before buying an air purifier or an air conditioning replacement, it’s important to do your research. After all, not all air purifiers have the same efficiency.

Here are some tips on choosing an air purifier that meets your home’s needs:

Consider the size of the room where you’re installing the air purifier. How large is the room where you’re planning on installing the air purifier? Small air purifiers don’t have the capacity to purify a large room, while large air purifiers, with their excess capacity, would be too much for a small- to mid-sized room.

Check the air purifier’s clean air delivery rate (CADR). Not all air purifiers can effectively filter out indoor pollutants. How can you tell if an air purifier will be able to effectively remove pollutants from your indoor air? By checking its CADR rating. The higher the unit’s CADR rating, the faster it can purify the air.

Check If the air purifier has high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters. Air purifiers with HEPA filters are the gold standard in air purification.  According to the standards set by the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology, HEPA filters should be able to trap up to 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns or larger. (Smoke particles are usually  0.1 to 0.3 microns, while dust particles are typically 0.5 to 3 microns in size.)

Check the air purifier’s noise level. If you’re installing an air purifier in your bedroom, you probably want to choose a quieter one. The level of noise produced by an air purifier is measured in decibels.

Are you having trouble choosing an air purifier? When in doubt, it’s best to stick to reputable brands such as Aerus and Infinity®. It’d also be helpful to consult an AC repair or replacement contractor.
