5 Steps to Reset Your Air Conditioner After a Power Outage

We’ve all been inconvenienced by sudden power outages that can last from a few seconds to hours on end. At this time, everything that runs on electricity is out of order, including your air conditioner. Once power is restored in your area, you might expect your AC to turn on like the rest of your home appliances. Unfortunately, it very likely won’t, and you might think it’s malfunctioned.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to help your AC unit resume normal operations. The local AC repair technicians at Air Products & Services discuss each procedure here:

Toggle to the “Off” position on your thermostat. With this step, you’re allowing the thermostat to stop “asking” the AC unit for cooling until you can reset the internal and external breakers. Changing the batteries might solve the problem, but if your thermostat doesn’t run on batteries, proceed to the next steps.

Reset the breaker. Power surges will overload the AC’s circuit, resulting in a tripped breaker. Locate your home’s circuit breaker box and find the one that’s labeled AC or HVAC. If there’s no label, look for the switch that’s standing in a neutral position. Flip the switch to “Off” then back to “On.”

Wait for half an hour. Air conditioning replacement pros recommend waiting for 30 minutes after taking the previous step. This might seem like an eternity, but it’s just long enough for the AC to reset its internal circuit breaker following the outage.

Turn the thermostat to “Cool” mode. After the 30 minutes are up, turn the thermostat back to “Cool” mode. This should get the AC unit back up and running. If it does, set the temperature to at least five degrees below the room temperature.

Call your HVAC service technician. If the above procedures don’t work, this could indicate a problem that requires an immediate inspection. Never attempt to fix the issue yourself; instead, call your local HVAC technician. After all, electricity issues and HVAC systems are best left in the hands of the pros.
