Plan Ahead
You and your remodeler will be working together during the planning stage. A good remodeler will take measures to protect your home, such as installing drop cloths and dust covers and covering their paths. Make sure your remodeler knows where the indoor and outdoor HVAC units are, and that your remodeling plans include plenty of protection for them.
Turn Off the HVAC System
Air conditioning installation takes about three days to complete. For remodeling projects that require less time, you can simply turn your HVAC system off for the duration of the project. However, if it must stay on, keep an eye on the air filters; the more dust in the air, the faster the air filter fills up.
Close Off Vents and Registers
If your renovation project is being done in a closed-off area, such as the bathroom, basement or a bedroom, seal off the vents and registers, or at least ask your remodeler to do so. Remodelers usually provide high-power fans to vent dust through the windows, which means room ventilation shouldn’t be a problem.
Clean Work Areas Regularly
Talk to your remodeler about how they’ll keep their work areas clean, especially if the remodeling work is expected to span several days. Cleaning work areas on a daily basis lets you use the other parts of your home without tracking dust and dirt around the house. It will also keep daily clean-ups to a minimum, as opposed to conducting a single—but lengthy—clean-up job once the remodeling project is completed.
Keep Most of the Work Outdoors
Certain tasks such as wood and tile cutting can be done in the yard, preferably away from the outdoor HVAC unit. Doing this will help reduce the amount of dust indoors.
