Lung Health Awareness: Ways to Improve Indoor Air Quality

We all know that indoor air quality is important, but most homeowners don’t fully recognize its importance until their health takes a turn for the worse. October is Healthy Lung Month, which is why the AC repair experts at Air Products and Services have compiled some tips on how to take care of your respiratory health while inside your home below.

Test Your Home for Traces of Radon

Radon, a naturally occurring, inert, and colorless gas, is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the industry. There’s no need to worry when you’re outside—radon gas disperses quickly outdoors. It becomes a problem when it manages to enter your home through cracks in your foundation. To protect yourself and your family, install a radon detector in your home.

Make Sure Your HVAC Unit Has a Built-In HEPA Filter

High efficiency particular (HEPA) air filters should be able to trap 99.97% of particulates 0.3 microns or larger, although they can also trap smaller particles. To give you an idea of how small these particles can be, spores usually range from 3-40 microns while bacteria can range from 0.3 to 60 microns. Apart from common allergens, HEPA filters can also remove chemical build-up in your home.  If you’re going to install an air conditioning replacement with a built-in HEPA filter, only hire an experienced HVAC technician.

Place Potted Plants Indoors

As an added precaution, it’d also be a good idea to place a few potted plants indoors. Certain plants, like aloe vera and spider plants, can remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, and xylene from the air indoors.

If you’re looking for other ways to improve indoor air quality, consult a local HVAC company.
